Hey, y'all,


A buddy and me are launching a YouTube Let's Play series Adventures of Ryace. We've got a couple of fun series already up, FTL and Juicy Realm, and we've just started Streets of Rogue and Dark Angels: Masquerade of Shadows, which have been really fun. I'll try to have daily uploads, but we might need a vacation day here and there. I plan to play a few NewGrounds games here and there, so stay tuned for that and let me know if there are any classic NG games that you think deserve to be seen.




I'd like to continue making art and animation and games and books, but at the moment I'm losing my will to keep going. Hopefully this will lift my spirits a bit and I'll be able to get back into creating content soon.

Background:  

Splash Halcyon was born into a fabulously wealthy business family in the million dollar high-rises of Eko Atlantic.  Unlike her sisters, who were easily amused by the fashion and music of Africa's largest city, Splash was always more intrigued by Lagos' dark underbelly, like the criminal Area Boys and Makoko slums. She used her inherited wealth to set herself up as a bounty hunter. She has learned to shoot with the Egyptian Thunderbolt forces and studied machete fighting with the Haitian masters. And naturally, her Sea Serpent ModBod, an ode to Mami Wata, is crammed with the finest biotech that money can buy. Although she's new to the field, Splash Halcyon is the scourge of criminal enterprises across Africa, and one of Hot Shots Squadron's most successful members.  


The new Mission Mode gives you the opportunity to fight in various missions, stealing coins, collecting macguffins, dueling rivals, etc. It definitely makes the shoot 'em up / beat 'em up formula more interesting.

(and for some reason, the random number generator decided to obsess over MacGuffin Hunt while I was trying to do recordings...)

It's not uncommon for a thief to earn the ire of those they've wronged. That's why they created the thief guild, after all, to protect each other from any duty-consumed guardsman or fame-chasing noble that tried to capture them for their crimes. But this time, the inhuman bounty hunter that's after one of their new recruits might be more than the guild can handle.


"Don't Worry, I Won't Be Long" seeks to offer a different take on the fantasy genre. Instead of some moldy castle or muck-ridden village, the tale is set in the sunny Mediterranean port city of Reggio di Calabria. Instead of overused elves or orcs, the characters are creatures like the long-eared panotti and canine cynocephalus, beings that medieval people actually believed in. The story is full of action and adventure, with villainous heroes and heroic villains, and meditations on mortality and the tragedy that naturally follows violent victories.

You may recall that I said previously that Duel Mode was completely uncertain because it would require a eureka breakthrough. Well, guess what? EUREKA! I've got it working enough to completely kick your ass, it's unbalanced and whacky, but this should just take time to refine.

This update is sort of a minor one, I want to make sure I give you something before I dive into some big things that will take a while to be visible.


Various character tweaks

The Jungle and Narrow Corridor stages have been removed (they might come back as something new eventually)

4 New Stages, Jail, Bar, Parking Lot A, Parking Lot B

New Mechanic: Firing your gun or striking with your melee weapon will now slowly degrade your upgrades. Structural Integrity upgrades will reduce the chance of this happening. To offset this, you will get more money from enemies. This should keep Melee upgrades from being monetarily overpowered, and encourage you to use more variety when attacking.

I have started working on Duel Mode, where you fight other playable characters, but the AI is very whacky. You can give it a try, but don't expect much.

Sorry to be absent for so long. I'm still working on Hot Shots, but it has been going slow, and the stuff I'm doing will take a while to turn into something I can do as an update.


I've had a couple of snafus in a row. Took a little vacation after the last big update. Got super sick during that vacation, had trouble getting back to work afterwards. I accidentally moved my resource folder in Godot and it partially rewrote all the file locations before crashing, so I had to manually reload them or point the game engine to right files again. This mostly worked except for stages, so I reloaded most of them manually, but I've been thinking of replacing the long tunnel level and the jungle level with better long tunnels and jungles already, so I decided to just not fix those levels. August is always rough on me, the long nights make it hard to sleep and by late summer I get very frayed. Add that to everything else, so I just spent most of the month in a bad mood, and even considered just canning the whole Hot Shots project for a while. (Before I realized what was wrong with the resource folder, I thought I might have to can the project)


But now I'm back, I've got the resource problem figured out, and I'm moving on to the next thing. The Survival Mode is pretty much complete, and I'm going to move on to the other major modes I want the game to have. I thought I'd be able to do a Duel Mode where you fight 1v1 against AI controlled playable characters, but I'm not happy enough with my AI to justify that as a separate mode at the moment. Trapping one zombie in the swarm behind a barrel is one thing, but if the only major enemy on the whole stage is doing that, it breaks the game. With the Duel Mode AI, it's not something I can just work on, I need to have a eureka moment about why my AI doesn't do what I think it should do. I'll try to work it into the other modes and hopefully by observing the AI, I'll be able to make some breakthroughs. The other major modes I've been wanting to do are Rogue Mode, which will have random dungeons like the original game, and Career Mode, which will have special missions to complete, like Collect Coins, Grab the MacGuffin, etc. For Rogue Mode I need to make randomizable dungeon maps, and for Career Mode and I need to do a lot of new programming for special missions.


So unfortunately, there's just a lot of behind-the-scenes work that needs to get done before anything new is ready. I am still working on Hot Shots, and have been all this time (minus vacation and freak out time). I have a few new characters that are close to done, but I don't want to do too much with new characters until I have these other big things worked out.

Well, June was a fun time of getting sick, getting depressed, getting vaccinated, getting more sick, and then eventually getting lots of work done on Hot Shots!


LOTS more enemies, mostly high level, so you'll need to play hard to reach them. I've adjusted the Survival Mode progression, so you should have more time to level up before getting steam rolled by super enemies. New Emotes to let you know when your shields are down, health is low, ammo is out, etc. Two new tropical island stages. And of course, new character, Cyclone Luster, the Ky Lan from Vietnam has joined the fray!

As you can tell from the great volume YT footage, I've gotten Hot Shots to a point where you can sit down for a pretty long gaming experience. I'm very excited about it, I hope you take the time to try it out.
